Overview
If your home or rental property is left unoccupied for an extended period, your insurance coverage may be affected. highlighted below are what you need to know:
How Long Can My Property Be Unoccupied?
Most Laferla Home Insurance policies allow properties to be unoccupied for up to 90 consecutive days. If it remains empty for longer, you must inform us to avoid any loss of cover.
What Happens After 90 Days?
- Some coverages (such as theft, vandalism, or water damage) may be reduced or excluded.
- Additional security measures (such as regular inspections) may be required.
- A special Unoccupied Property Endorsement may be needed to maintain full cover.
What Can I Do to Maintain Cover?
- Notify Laferla if your property will be empty for an extended period.
- Arrange regular inspections – A friend, family member, or caretaker should check on the property.
- Secure the home – Ensure doors and windows are locked, install alarms if necessary.
-
Keep utilities running – Prevent issues like burst pipes by maintaining basic heating in winter.
If the property is under renovation: Coverage may be affected, depending on the extent of the work.
If you are renting it out: You may need Landlord Insurance instead of a standard home policy.
