Overview
Being involved in a car accident can be stressful, but knowing what to do can make the claims process smoother. Follow these steps if you're in an accident:
Step 1: Ensure Safety First
- Stop immediately – It is illegal to leave the scene of an accident.
- Check for injuries – Call 112 for an ambulance if needed.
-
Move to a safe location if possible, but avoid obstructing evidence. Remember to capture photo and video evidence of the accident before moving your vehicles, to help insurers assess the accident scene.
Step 2: Call the Right Authorities
- Non-Complex Minor Accidents with No Injuries? Complete a "Front-to-Rear Form"; no additional report is required. The Front-to-Rear Form itself indicates which type of accident scenarios fall within this context.
- Minor Accidents (No Injuries)? Call the Local Wardens (LESA) at 2132 0202 to file a report.
- Accidents with Injuries (even Minor Injuries)? Call 112 and wait for emergency services. In case of any injuries, a Police Report is mandatory.
-
Hit by a drunk driver? Always inform the police and insist that it is mentioned in the report, as the insurer of the party at fault is legally required to cover you.
Step 3: Gather Evidence
- Take clear photos of vehicle damage, number plates, and the accident scene.
- Exchange contact and insurance details with the other driver(s).
- Get witness statements if possible.
Step 4: Submit Your Claim to Laferla
- Contact Laferla as soon as possible.
- Provide all necessary documents (accident report, photos, any police reports).
- If your car needs repairs, Laferla will guide you on this process.
NOTE:
Never admit fault at the scene but leave that to the insurance assessors. Rules of the road can be complex, and admitting fault would prevent us from arguing a case in your favour. If your vehicle is undrivable, Laferla’s Roadside Assistance can help.
